After his run in 2009 at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Usain Bolt set a world record in the 100-meter sprint. He ran 109 yards in less than 10 seconds, reaching a top speed of 27.33 miles per hour (That’s almost as fast as a horse!). With this world record under his belt, Usain Bolt is considered the fastest man in the world, far surpassing what we believed to be the limit of human speed. Similarly, with innovative L-PRF treatment, we can exceed the typical limitations of post-surgical healing!
Dental work is notoriously slow, often involving long and drawn-out healing periods. Fortunately, Brockley Dental Center has a way to fast-track your healing. Using L-PRF, we safely and effectively jumpstart your healing journey, accelerating your recovery process!
What is L-PRF?
L-PRF is an acronym for “Leukocyte-and Platelet-Rich Fibrin.”
- Leukocytes, also known as white blood cells, are responsible for protecting you against diseases and infections.
- Platelets are small cell fragments in blood that stick together to form a clot, or sort of “plug” that closes wounds and prevents bleeding.
- Fibrin is a protein that helps form a blood clot.
While a blood clot may sound like a bad thing, it usually isn’t!
Blood clots are a natural bandage, protecting your wound from both further bleeding and infection. After procedures like dental extractions, a blood clot is actually an important part of the healing process, as it protects your exposed areas from bacteria.
Forming a sort of “clot” with these biological materials enables you to accelerate your healing process, as they produce essential growth factors!
The L-PRF Process
Most often, we use L-PRF treatment after an oral surgery.
Extractions, bone grafting, and implant placement procedures all benefit from the use of L-PRF!
In many cases, these surgeries may involve weeks, if not months, of healing. During this healing process, you may experience pain, discomfort, and a prolonged period of time without the use of your teeth.
L-PRF treatment, however, can help with that!
Our chief dental assistant, Alyssa, is a certified phlebotomist who helps with all of our L-PRF treatments. Using a practiced hand, she will gently draw a small amount of your blood. Then, she’ll place it in the centrifuge for about 15 minutes, where it will separate into 3 sections. By separating your leukocytes and platelets from the other materials, we form L-PRF material!
Afterwards, she’ll take the L-PRF material and place it on your extraction site. In some cases, we may place your implant with L-PRF material. In other cases, we may combine L-PRF material with bone grafting to help rebuild your bone more quickly.
Either way, patients like you can expect to feel less discomfort, heal faster, and experience better outcomes with your treatment.
Healing With Dental Implants
At Brockley Dental Center, we use mini dental implants.
These titanium posts replace missing teeth to restore your smile with a crown, bridge, or denture restoration. However, mini implants involve drilling into your jawbone, which disrupts your gum and bone tissues. Healing from a mini dental implant takes only a few weeks, but this process can be accelerated with L-PRF treatment!
Rather than sticking to soft foods for 2 weeks, you may experience faster healing and less discomfort! Patients who undergo L-PRF treatment typically find that their mouth is less sore and their ability to eat tougher foods returns relatively quickly. While there is no guaranteed timeframe, many patients find that their ability to function is restored much quicker with L-PRF.
Additionally, some patients experience better outcomes, too! With mini implants, there is a very slim chance for your implant to fail, meaning it doesn’t stabilize properly in your bone. L-PRF reduces this chance even further, as the material promotes bone growth, securing your implant in your jaw.
