A veneer is a thin shell typically made of porcelain that is cemented onto the front surface of a tooth. During the preparation for veneers, only a minimal amount of tooth structure is removed, similar to the process of applying a press-on nail. Veneers are suitable for individuals with healthy teeth and gums who desire to alter the shape and color of their teeth. Candidates for veneers generally do not have large existing fillings or cavities.
On the other hand, a crown, also known as a cap, involves the removal of more tooth structure compared to a veneer. This allows the crown to fit over the prepared tooth. Like veneers, crowns are cemented onto the tooth. Candidates for crowns typically have large existing fillings or cavities that require more extensive restoration.
Whether the choice is a veneer, a crown, or a combination of both, the goal is to achieve a beautiful smile for the patient.
