Imagine you’re building a fence on your lawn, but instead of nails you use glue to keep the wooden boards together. While they may stay secure initially, any pressure or wind could send your fence tumbling down into the grass below. With nials, you can screw each piece of wood in place, ensuring that your structure stays upright and secure! While dentures don’t perform the same function as a fence, they do require a similar level of stability. Traditional dentures have no screws to keep them in place, just the structure of your jawbone, suction, and occasionally some denture glue. Though they may be secure at first, your dentures will eventually slide around in your mouth, potentially negatively affecting your quality of life. However, at Brockley Dental Center, we use mini dental implants for denture security!
Using mini implants as anchors for your denture, we can provide a beautiful and functional smile that stays in place.
Why Are Traditional Dentures So Unstable?
When you lose teeth, you don’t just lose the crown—or the portion of your tooth visible above the gum line. You also lose the tooth root, which is the portion of your tooth that lies below the gum line. These roots are embedded into your jawbone, applying pressure to your jawbone when you bite or chew! This pressure helps stimulate your jawbone, keeping it healthy and dense. When you lose teeth, you lose that pressure, causing your jawbone to resorb—losing mass and volume.
Bone resorption has various effects on both your bone structure and your oral health. With a shrinking jawbone, your lips will lose support, starting to sink in where the missing bone would be. Additionally, you may develop severe wrinkling around your lips, and the shape of your face may change over time.
Below the surface, your jawbone continues to deteriorate. The longer you go without replacing your missing teeth, the more your jawbone will resorb. Unfortunately, many secure replacement methods like traditional dental implants require ample jawbone to restore your smile.
Patients with reduced jawbone structure aren’t eligible for traditional implants without a bone graft—or a procedure that replenishes lost jawbone material. While this procedure is effective, it is also costly, and adds to your total procedure time.
Thankfully, mini dental implants provide a better solution for denture security. These reliable implants both promote jawbone health and replace the missing teeth of patients with minimal jawbone structure left.
Why Use Mini Implants for Denture Stability?
Mini dental implants are less than 3 millimeters in width, making them about half the size of a conventional implant. While this size difference may not seem important, it actually plays a crucial role in the numerous benefits mini implants have to offer!
Due to their smaller size, we use a minimally invasive procedure that preserves important tissues surrounding your implant. Tissue preservation not only allows for faster healing but also makes mini implants more accessible to those with less jawbone. Even without a bone graft, many patients with reduced jawbone density are still eligible for a mini implant procedure to secure their false teeth.
Additionally, mini dental implants have a sleek one piece design that allows us to place them in just one appointment, significantly reducing your time in the dentist’s chair. In just one appointment, we place your implants and secure a temporary—or in some cases final—restoration that very same day! With fewer appointments and parts, using mini implants for denture security is much less expensive than traditional implant procedures.
What Mini Implant Denture Options Do You Provide?
At Brockley Dental Center, we provide three distinct implant denture options. At your initial appointment, we will further discuss these dentures and determine which is right for your smile. The options available are as follows:
Snap-in dentures: These dentures have the pink base like traditional dentures, but without the bulky upper plate. With mini implants in your jawbone, you can trust that these dentures won’t slide around or fall out of your mouth! For easy cleaning, you can remove these dentures and place them back on your implants with a “snap.”
- Semi-permanent roundhouse bridge: This roundhouse bridge doesn’t require the pink denture base, but can have it for extra lip support. On 6-10 mini implants, this restoration stays in your mouth providing a strong bite. Although you never remove it, we will remove a semi-permanent roundhouse bridge at routine cleanings to help maintain your oral health.
- Permanent roundhouse bridge: As its name suggests, a permanent roundhouse bridge is cemented in place, never to come out of your mouth. These dentures function almost like natural teeth, as they provide an incredibly strong bite and look natural in your mouth! Without the bulky pink base, this roundhouse bridge looks seamless, and is secure on 10-12 mini implants.
